It is time for a new feature in my blog series ‘People who inspire me’, don’t you agree? And today I am taking you all the way to sunny Madrid in Spain. I want you to meet María Vázquez Vizoso, the creative mind behind the blog Dr. Livinghome. If you are not familiar with María’s work so far, you will be up for a treat! Dr. Livinghome is a perfect name for her blog. Although I would say she is also some kind of wizard when it comes to transforming spaces. She is known for her awesome before & after projects and I will share a few highlights here too.

Why do I love María’s work? Well when you look at her Instagram account, it is pretty obvious. Just like me, she likes plants, vintage items, a personal and affordable style. No luxury, no over-styled spaces. Instead you will find many DIY projects and simple ideas to inspire you to transform your home too. Spreading this inspiration with a vibrant, warm, and cool style and showing how you can redecorate your home on a budget and with a sustainable twist, that is the magic of Dr. Livinghome.

Honestly, whenever I see one of María’s DIY projects in her home (which she uses as a sort of decor lab as she says), I wish I were a better DIY person. With more skills and more time at hand. But even though I am not as good with DIYs as María is, her blog still ignites ongoing inspiration and ideas for my own home decor projects. Can we talk about her bedroom makeover for example? Oh my! That floating plant shelf above the bed, that bedspread! Of course these are all María’s own DIY ideas.

If I move to a bigger place one day (Lord, do you hear my prayers?) I think I need to hire María for a few decor projects. I would love to include some of her handmade artwork in my home, or such a wonderful throw, or even get a vintage sideboard upcycled by her? The ideas are abundant!

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Tropicool Styling

Summer is in full swing here. More than 30 degrees outside and in my rooftop apartment – equally! Truly I live a tropical dream (or nightmare at nights), whether I want it or not. So working on our summer styling topic ‘Tropicool’ for the Urban Jungle Bloggers was pretty easy. Given the limited space, I opted for a tropicool reading nook. Surrounded by my tropical plants of course!

For practical reasons I decided to install my tropicool reading nook right next to my tropical plant gang. The ever growing Monstera deliciosa, the Kentia palm, my Calathea orbifolia, as well as my Ponytail palm and a tiny Banana plant were a perfect backdrop. The dusky pink Serie 7 chair by Arne Jacobsen was a perfect colour addition for the tropical theme and it matched my new Anthurium with pink flowers. A few cushions, my record player, and the latest issue of the Blad Journal, and all was set!

But enough about the simple styling. Let us talk about the plants! So why have I flocked my tropical plants together? First of all for practical reasons. When I water them (which is more frequently than the other plants) I can do it all at once. Plus tropical plants prefer a higher humidity level. A group of plants creates a certain microclimate all by themselves already. But it is also very handy when you mist the plants. One round of misting and all plants get a tropical cover of water drops. Additionally I have a little hydrometer to keep track of the humidity level.

Now let’s turn to the relaxed part. Once the plant care routine is over, it’s time to enjoy the tropicool nook. Listening to some favorite vinyls, reading a magazine, and enjoying the presence of my pets – wooden elephant bookends, a little carved monkey, a wooden floating bird, the ceramic bird by the Bouroullec brothers. Oh and my vintage Mexican ceramic cat! How cute is she? I found her and the beautiful wooden carved plant stand/table in one of my favorite vintage webshops, Moineau.

But enough with my tropicool corner. I am off to read your stories and see your tropicool stylings! Enjoy the summer!

My Vegetable Container Garden

Hello! Today I’m headed to Atlanta to go to the Haven Conference. If any of you happen to be going, I’d love to meet you. I don’t go to as many conferences any more (I’m such a homebody!) but about every other year I try to attend one, so this is the year. :) Awhile […]

Design made in Paris: Red Edition

Red Edition, furniture design, Paris, French design, design made in Paris, interior design

My love relationship with Paris is multilayered. Love, the city life, the food, I could go on and on. But another aspect is design made in Paris. So let me introduce Red Edition to you. Red Edition is a Paris based design label since 2006. They are specialized in beautiful yet simple and colourful furniture designs. And let me add: They’re designs have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’. A dash of Paris if you want so!

Their latest collection is spot on. It seems to have a certain glamorous aura of the 1920s with a very contemporary twist. The new ‘Wicker Sofa’ with brass accents is one of my personal highlights! It looks glamorous, cool, urban, stylish all in one. Or how about those new stools? The combination of wood, textiles, and brass is just ‘magnifique’! Shall we talk about the ‘Totem Mirror’ too? How beautiful is it? Is it just a mirror or an art piece too? I think it is both!

Red Edition is Paris based but their designs can be labeled as international. A global team of designers comes up with new ideas but one thing seems to be coherent in all their pieces: a certain Parisian DNA. Maybe it is just my imagination and my romanticized idea of Paris – but I think with a piece of Red Edition furniture you also bring a piece of Paris into your home. No matter where you are!
