Designed with Love by Vivianna Torun

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen and visit two amazing Danish design brands. Today I want to talk about one of these brands: Georg Jensen. I visited Georg Jensen’s headquarters in Copenhagen four years ago for the first time – see here. Yet I was very excited to rediscover the halls of this traditional Danish design brand. With a history of more than 100 years Georg Jensen belongs to big purveyors of craftsmanship. From traditional silverware, over shiny stainless steel beauties for the home, to jewelry – the world of Georg Jensen is defined by beauty, craftsmanship, and passion.

This time our visit had a special reason: Georg Jensen is celebrating 50 years of timeless jewelry designs by master silversmith and beauty icon Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe. Now if this name does not ring a bell for you, no worries. I haven’t heard of her either until last week. But then I was charmed and literally fell in love with her and her work. I will try to tell you why.

This outstanding woman was not only beautiful, but she was utterly inspiring, talented, open-minded, and brave. Her mantra was ‘To be, not to seem’. Her vision of life claimed one thing: To be true to yourself and your passions. And this is like a radiating power that inspires people even today. And I was certainly hit by this ray of inspiration when I visited the reenacted studio of Vivianna Torun at Georg Jensen. The staff at Georg Jensen paid due respect to details when they recreated the designer’s studio. Precious stones, half finished silver jewelry, tools, books, vases, photographies – you could almost feel Vivianna’s spirit in the room. From the very beginning she was inspired by nature’s essential shapes and by the power of love. Two ingredients that defined her work for the rest of her life.

I particularly loved all the little details and side stories about Vivianna’s life and designs. For example, when she designed her Bangle Watch she wanted to free people from the slavery of time. She observed that people were rushed and looking at their watch they lost all connection to themselves as it was only time that ruled them. Hence she created a Bangle Watch and instead of a regular watch face with the hours she added a mirroring face. So people would actually see their own face when looking at the watch and being reminded that what counts is them and their life. Not the running minutes and hours. Isn’t she just wonderful!?

Another iconic piece is the Torun Bangle. The simplicity and sleek beauty of this bangle is striking. But the core idea behing the bangle is, that together we are stronger than apart. By bringing the two ends of the bangle together and clinging them to each other, we get a strong and beautiful bangle. An idea rooted in the eternal belief in love. Even though initially designed for women, this bangle strikes with timeless beauty and fits men and women equally. I am the lucky owner of a silver bangle with my initials and knowing the story behind it makes me appreciate it even more. During our visit we even had the unique opportunity to make one Torun Bangle by ourselves to see the craftsmanship that goes into one piece. Amazing!

Design that is inspired by nature and by love, design that is timeless, and the spirit of a free-minded woman shining through times – what is there not to love? Now you might understand a little bit my new love relationship with Vivianna Torun.

This blog post has been brought to you in collaboration with Georg Jensen. As always all opinions and photos are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands who support this blog!

Magnolia Market & Silos {Out to See}

Have you had an opportunity to visit Chip & Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market & the Silos in Waco, Texas? I haven’t been there, but my daughter Courtney was there recently with a couple of friends. She had a great time, so I hope to have the chance to visit someday. But until then, she was […]

My Organized Spice Drawer

This post is sponsored by Brother We’ve been really enjoying cooking meals in our newly remodeled kitchen over the past eight months! We were getting used to cooking outside or in our electric skillet in our laundry room, but it’s so nice to have a real designated space again for daily meals. We try to eat at home […]

Lessons from A White Painted Fireplace Makeover

You know that house in blogland or on Instagram (or in your neighborhood) where everything about it seems absolutely perfect? Well, I think “perfect” can be a misunderstood standard. Especially in our own home. What does perfect mean to you? Will a house be perfect if you can spend a lot of money on it? […]

People who inspire me: Gretafio

New week, new portrait for my regular blog series ‘People who inspire me’. Today I want to introduce you to a very inspiring lady that I e-met on Instagram. Greta, or Gretafio on Instagram, is based in Leipzig in eastern Germany. Her Insta feed is a daily source of inspiration to me. In my eyes, her feed is the expression of an unpretentious, happy, and balanced life. It is laced with her aesthetics and her admiration for the nature and interiors. Looking both at her home and her adventures fuels my inspiration. And I bet it will fuel yours too!

Like in most of my previous portraits for this blog series, I don’t know the protagonist personally. Yet I feel a connection that is sparked through inspiration mostly on Instagram or their blogs. Greta is not writing a blog but she is an avid Instagrammer. And her eye for details and for light is special – thus it gives me new ideas. Not only ideas about stylings and home decor, but also ideas about working with light and taking better pictures on Instagram.

I need not mention that we both share a mutual love for plants. That was pretty obvious, right? Her home is very inspiring in general – I am drawn to her moody tones and darker colour palette, her lived-in style with a clear stamp of personality. Beautiful vintage furniture, collected art and decor objects, fresh flowers, and lush plants – they all live happily side by side in her airy Leipzig home.

I invite you to not only enjoy these pictures of her home here on the blog, but to follow Greta on Instagram too. You will get wonderful, moody inspiration on-the-go and a glimpse into the unpretentious, relaxed, and beautiful life of a regular human being – just like you and me. Enjoy!
