Domotex Highlights: Rugs for the Home

A few weeks ago I traveled to Hannover for the Domotex fair. The Domotex fair is focused on flooring and rugs and quite frankly I was not sure what I am going to see there. However, I knew it is going to be a fun event as I was traveling with seven fellow bloggers and friends, all united by Holly of Decor8. So I knew it is going to be fun at least. But hey was I surprised – the fair turned out to be very inspiring! Actually no wonder as I am a rug person myself. From traditional flatweaves from India, over colourful kilims from Turkey to contemporary rug designs from Germany and Austria – everything was exhibited and sparked a good deal of inspiration. Let me show you!

Mariantonia Urru – Mediterranean design from Sardinia, Italy
One of my big discoveries was the Italian rug brand Mariantonia Urru. This brand comes from the sunny island of Sardinia and its designs are inspired by ancient and traditional motives of the island’s folkore, mostly taken from its Mediterranean culture. Fish motives, traditional patterns, and a unique way of knotting are absoulte highlights! Moreover, the folks at Mariantonia Urru give a contemporary spin to the traditional motives and craftsmanship resulting in great designs for modern homes. I particularly loved the poufs with the fish symbols in their warm ochre and blue hues.

Tisca – from Austria with love
Now here’s a fact I am almost ashamed of: Before Domotex I have not heard of Tisca! And the crazy thing is this rug company is based in western Austria, actually in the province where I was born and where I grew up. Shame on me! Tisca had a strong presence at the Domotex fair thanks to its beautiful rugs and the fantastic styling work of Lotta Agaton and Pella Hedeby. Both ladies went on an inspiration quest to Transylvania in Romania where the rugs are handmade. Inspired by the craftsmanship, the tools, and the nature they brought in a fantastic set of props to match the natural hues of the soft Tisca rugs. The result was a clean, contemporary styling that appealed to many fair visitors. Not to mention to us interior bloggers!

Bazar du Sud – the traveling rug souk
I love everything about kilims and Moroccan rugs, whether we talk about Boucherouite, Beni Ourain, flatweaves and other Berber rugs. Bazar du Sud came all the way from Marrakech to Hannover and they brought an entire rug souk with them. Piles and piles of rugs, colourful stapes, shaggy Boucherouites, black and white Beni Ourain rugs, kilims galore – the sight was a feast to my eyes. If I had the opportunity, I would have shopped a few rugs for sure. No idea where I would have put them, but how to resist? It was like a candy store for kids! Just the interior version. Check them out if you like oriental rugs.

Edelgrund – the rug dealer from Hamburg
When you think of colourful kilims you might not have Hamburg in mind. Well, not necessarily, but Edelgrund is a fantastic counter proof. Based in the north German city of Hamburg, Edelgrund offers a wide range of beautiful and colourful kilims that blend traditional patterns and modern designs. They are known for their vast variety of unique rugs. Look at the piles of flatweaves – I mean who can resist!? Definitely a brand to watch!

I hope you enjoyed this tiny little tour of my favorite rug discoveries from this year’s Domotex fair. As you can see all the photos are iPhone pics but I hope you don’t mind the quality. Thanks again to Holly of Decor8 for organizing this great tour and also a virtual wave to my other blogger friends who joined: Niki of My Scandinavian Home, Agata of Passion Shake, Mette of Monsterscircus, Desirée of Vosgesparis and Stefan aka Trendstefan.

The tour was sponsored by the Domotex fair. As always all opinions and photos are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands who support this blog!

Style Alert: Industrial (Urban) Jungle

Industrial Jungle, Home24, interior styling, interior design, interior styling, natural materials, plants

Industrial Jungle, Home24, interior styling, interior design, interior styling, natural materials, plants

When raw materials, scruffy surfaces, and dark tones meet the lush and juicy greens of a jungle, we can refer to it as ‘Industrial Jungle’. Even though the words are truly opposed to each other, the concept applies just perfectly for interior styling. And quite frankly, it resonates a lot with my current interior style. Ok, in my case I would extend the terminology to ‘Industrial Urban Jungle’. Sounds good, right? But let us have a look what I mean with that term.

One of my go-to source for great and affordable furniture and home accessories is Home24. I’ve already blogged about them several times, but today I want to highlight the ‘Industrial Jungle’ styling theme as it resonates with my interior style. To be honest, with my move to the new apartment I was on the hunt for a few new pieces. I found almost everything pretty quickly, but when I was looking for a comfy armchair, it took me quite a while. But I was lucky on Home24! I have to admit, my chosen armchair perfectly fits the theme ‘Industrial Jungle’ but I will reveal that another time.

Today I want to share a few other favorites from the ‘Industrial Jungle’ styling theme of Home24. I have selected a few pieces, among them a fantastic round dining table that looks a lot like mine (see HERE). As you can see, the style is defined by a good mix of natural materials like wood and sturdy metal/steel frames and details. Also cords, raw fixtures, botanical prints, and plants define this style. The colour palette is earthy, not too vibrant and bright. Dashes of green invigorate this rather darker style.

What do you think about the style? Do you have the style at home too? Or would you mix it? I like it a lot as it perfectly matches my love for vintage items, collected pieces, ethnic patterns. Combined with lots of lush plants this looks absolutely viable for an interior to me! Thoughts?

New Home: Living Room Part 1

As an interiors blogger I almost feel ashamed for not covering my new home so far. After all I’ve been living in my new apartment for two months now but things take time. It took time to move, to unpack, to design a new kitchen. But one thing I can tell you: Things are coming together nicely. And after nearly two months I truly feel at home in my new place. So maybe it is time to start a little home tour. Since there is lots to show and tell, I will do it in various posts. Today let me kick off with one corner of my living room. All eyes on my new leather sofa from Sitzfeldt. Something I really dreamed about for a long time.

Some of you might remember my old sofa in the small rooftop apartment. It was a nice mid-century inspired grey sofa. But for a long time I’ve flirted with the idea of having a tan leather sofa. But the space was too limited in my old place. Now in my bigger apartment it was time to make that little dream come true! When Sitzfeldt approached me for a collaboration, I had no idea what to do. And then I found a new apartment. And then I flirted with Tom. Not what you are thinking! Tom is actually the name of my new leather sofa from Sitzfeldt!

So Tom and I, yes we live happily together. The sofa is very classical but has also some refined details that I loved from the first moment. The size is very comfortable and great for lounging and I love the base. You can customize the sofas at Sitzfeldt, so for my Tom Sofa I opted for the ‘Pur’ line of aniline leather in a tan tone and a walnut wooden frame base. I think that combination is a winner for my personal interior style, don’t you agree?

What is important to know when it comes to leather, is its quality and provenance. At Sitzfeldt they pay due attention to high quality leather with respect to the animals, the environment, and customer satisfaction. They receive their leather exclusively from one tannery in Germany. They received as the first tannery worldwide the Blue Angel Certification, a German certificate for environmentally friendly products. And trust me, Germans are very strict with their certificates! If you are not a fan of leather, do not fret. As the Tom sofa – as well as all other models – come in various upholstery options.

I am really happy with the look and feel of my sofa. Also in combiantion with the simple throw cusions in jewel tones and a mix of linen and velvet is just working for me. The next open task is the wall above the sofa. I am thinking of doing something there too. If you have any suggestions, let me know in the comments. It could be all from art, to shelves, to plants to whatever! I am still pondering! Up to then, I will sit on the sofa and think. I will keep you posted!

Botanical Garden in Hannover, Germany

Traveling nurtures the soul. Equally I believe that plants nurture the soul. So why not combining both passions? That’s what I had in mind when I traveled to the Domotex fair in Hannover, Germany, last weekend. I will tell you more about the Domotex fair soon. But first things first. You know me. Thanks to the fabulous organization by the fair and above all Holly of Decor8, we got to discover Hannover a little bit. One of our stops was the local botanical garden at the Herrenhäuser Gärten. And yes, I was absolutely in my element right there and then. Happy Igor in an urban jungle!

The botanical garden in Hannover, Germany, is open year round. It is part of the beautiful Herrenhäuser Gärten area featuring vast outdoor gardens and parks. The botanical garden itself features both, an external gardens and several greenhouses. Due to the season (and a frosty wind), I focused on the greenhouses only this time. Unfortunately, one of the greenhouses with tropical plants was closed due to an upcoming butterfly exhibition. Still I enjoyed a few other greenhouses with huge cacti and succulents, lush orchids, and thriving plants from the Canary Islands.

Speaking of orchids: The botanical garden in Hannover features one of the largest orchid exhibition in all of Europe. When we talk about orchids, forget the common Phalaenopsis orchids that we see in every other supermarket. We talk about beautiful varieties with large and tiny flowers, hanging, growing in the midst of tropical palms, colorful, subtle. It was a real pleasure to have a closer look. No wonder this location is popular for wedding photo shoots (one was happening right then).

If you ever find yourself in Hannover, Germany, I warmly recommend a visit to the Herrenhäuser Gärten (it must be marvelous in summer) and to the botanical garden in particular. As a plant lover you will find excitement and serenity at the same time. I hope you enjoyed the little green tour!
