It’s been quite a long time since I made a book review here on Happy Interior Blog. Today I am happy to introduce you to a fantastic food and travel book entitled ‘Süsses Belgrad’ in German. In English the title translates to ‘Sweet Belgrade’ and that’s exactly what you will find in this book. My friend and food blogger Sara Plavic of ‘Birds Like Cake’ fulfilled a long lasting dream with this book. She takes us on a sweet trip to the Serbian capital Belgrade and reveals some of the country’s finest recipes.

‘Sweet Belgrade’ is both a travel and a foodie book. Why? Because this book combines both topics. In fact, it tells even more. ‘Süsses Belgrad’ talks about the country’s food tradition and culture. Also it takes the reader on an inspiring tour through Belgrade’s vivid café and restaurant scene. We also discover the city’s markets and sights. The heart of the book however are the luscious recipes.

Being myself of Serbian origin, I am familiar with most of the recipes. Especially the sweet treats (they are in the focus of this book) are very common and popular across Serbia and the Serbian diaspora. Homemade sweets are an essential part of the Serbian coffee culture. Some of my favorite sweets are in this book too like the delicious ‘Breskvice’. This word translates into ‘small peaches’ and those cookies look like little juicy peaches indeed. I think this is a recipe I will try in my new kitchen soon! Moreover, the book offers also a range of recipes for savoury delicacies from Serbia too (yummy ‘Gibanica’, a cheese filled filo pastry dish that is traditionally eaten with yoghurt among others). You will definitely discover a new cuisine!

Another aspect that I love about this book is the photography. For ‘Sweet Belgrade’ Sara collaborated with a talented local photographer named Sonja Lazukic who perfectly captured the rugged charms of Belgrade and the scrumptious specialties. For the time being this book is only available in German. If you read and understand German, I have good news for you: I am giving away one copy of ‘Süsses Belgrad’ on my Instagram account. Hop over and join in! Also you can grab a copy directly HERE. Enjoy and welcome to Serbia and Belgrade! Prijatno (‘enjoy your meal’ in Serbian)!

People who inspire me: Edgarwerner

It’s time for a new edition for the series ‘People who inspire me’. And today I want to show you that I am not only inspired by eclectic, bohemian homes, but that I can also be inspired by rather minimalistic interiors. Today I am introducing you to the Instagram account ‘edgarwerner’ by 25 years old Tobias from Germany. His home is pretty neat and sober – black and white are the dominating hues accentuated by the vibrant green of houseplants.

What inspires me most about Tobias is that at 25 he is so much more sophisticated than I was. He has a clear idea of what he likes and how he wants to style his space. At 25 I was pretty all over the place. Malicious gossip has it that I am still all over the place – but now it is my conscious decision! But I digress. I also admit that Tobias’ love for plants was an immediate hook for me. Moreover, I like the little snippets he shares from his life over on Instagram. Also it helps that we both seem to love coffee.

Even though Tobias’ home is sparsely decorated, there are bits and pieces that talk about his likes and his character. The numerous plants, botanical art, as well as the German Urban Jungle book reveal his love for plants and nature. A skateboard leisurely placed in the living room speaks about his hobby. Hung pictures tell about his private surrounding. And that is what counts in an interior no matter the style: That you add a bit of your personality into it!

Hop over to Instagram to see Tobias’ account named ‘edgarwerner’ and discover a young and stylish guy who likes Altbau (old German pre-war era buildings), plants, and coffee. Maybe grab a cup of coffee before that as you will crave coffee for sure!

Kitchen Inspiration with Reform

Moving to a new apartment brought one big challenge to me: designing my own kitchen! In search of kitchen inspiration I remembered one Danish brand that I met a few years ago: Reform. Reform is a Danish design brand that is specialized in offering architect-designed solutions for IKEA kitchens.

Reform projects start with a basic ingredient – elements from the IKEA kitchen. The regular IKEA kitchenped is pimped by architect-designed fronts and countertops to create an aesthetic and a personal style that combines quality construction, function and timeless design. Hence, a regular IKEA kitchen elevates itself into a distinctive design piece. Also, the same system applies to existing, older IKEA kitchens. Why buying a completely new kitchen if you can give your existing IKEA kitchen a facelift with Reform?

I really like the very modern kitchen fronts offered by Reform. One of my favorites is their Basis design. I like the simplicity of these fronts with the basic but stylish handles. It is a really great framework for a timeless kitchen design. Combined with a beautiful wooden countertop and a tiled backsplash – I say thumbs up!

Now I am in the middle of my moving process and just today I am having an appointment with an IKEA kitchen designer. However, I am going there with an already ripe idea in my head. I had a few weeks to think and plan on my own. But I am eager to work on that plan and visualize it with the kitchen designer today. My current kitchen in the new apartment is just a room that turned into a plant refuge for the time being – maybe you saw it on Instagram already.

Wish me luck and stay tuned. I will be sharing my kitchen design process with you along the way over on Instagram and later here on Happy Interior Blog too.
