I absolutely love this green trellis sitting room in Sara Ruffin Costello’s New Orleans home. I visited this house during design showcase years ago and stood in this very room and loved it. So much fun running upon it again!

Even for a vintage lover like me, sometimes a contemporary design piece is a good way to spice up the home decor. Mixing vintage and contemporary pieces can actually create a nice vibe – the juxtaposition of new and old is quite interesting, in both interior decor as well as, let’s say, architecture. As I already told you a few times here on the blog, Pamono is one of my go-to source for vintage items. But Pamono is way more than an online marketplace for vintage furniture and home accessories: It also features amazing contemporary designs from international artists. It doesn’t come as a surprise that I opted for a contemporary vase that really looks like it was made for me – a crystal vase by Belgian designer Isaac Monté.
I discovered the outstanding work of Isaac Monté for the first time during a design trip to Antwerp. His crystal works are really outstanding. For his ‘Crystal Series’ he created one-of-a-kind vases, lights and accessories by replicating stalagmites. To achieve this look he grew the crystals for his series organically – they grew around certain shapes allowing each object to be completely unique in shape, color and texture. Such as the vase I chose.
Avid readers of Happy Interior Blog might also recognize the setting where the new vase is placed in – it’s my friend Ben’s home. I felt the vase will be like in a natural habitat surrounded by plants, ceramics and other crystals. And I think it does! The magic of Isaac Monté’s works is their uniqueness making them both, an exceptional signature piece on its own or a great addition to a collection or styling vignette. I chose a vase though I also like his crazily nice crystal insects! Have you seen them (they are actually brooches)?
As you see Pamono is not only my go-to source for vintage items. Also contemporary design is a strong focus of this online marketplace. Hence this is probably the most comfortable way of sourcing unique contemporary design objects from around the world – all by sitting on your sofa! But the best thing is to simply try it yourself! Next time you are looking for the one-of-a-kind piece for your home, consider browsing Pamono. I bet you will be successful! At least I was every time I tried!

The dilemma remains–rug v no rug in the dining room. Let’s decide. Here are a bunch of great dining rooms, some with a rug under the table, some without.
I am trying to decide what to do at my house. Currently, I do not have a rug under the table. I always thought it was weird to have food over any soft surface other than hardwood, stone or tile, but lately all these fabulous dining rooms with rugs under the table to ground the space are changing my mind.

For a start I would like to tweak a famous movie quote into this: Vienna is always a good idea! Honestly, that was my first thought while spending a weekend in Vienna recently. I kinda forgot how awesome, beautiful and rich the Austrian capital is. Think of beautiful architecture, art, culture and more. My travel purpose was not only to rediscover Vienna’s beauties, but also to experience a wonderful design hotel: the Altstadt Vienna hotel. Located in the 7th Bezirk (city quarter) this hotel is a sort of epitome of a Viennese residence. Forget the typical hotel vibe – this is more like a Viennese townhouse and you’ll feel like a part of the upper society in Vienna when residing at the Altstadt Vienna hotel. Let me tell you why.
The hotel is a family-run business and has lots of personality. The owner Otto Wiesenthal runs the hotel with his daughters and brings in lots of character to the former city palais. Originally built in 1902, the building itself has lots of character already. But the owners manage to accentuate the building’s charm with their refined taste for art. Every room is a little design discovery on its own and you will see and feel both – the hand of the chosen interior designers/artists as well as the owners. Collected items, rare art pieces – all these complement the unique interior styles of the 61 rooms of the Altstadt Vienna hotel.
Call me a lucky bastard, you have the right to! Why? Becaue I was staying in the fabulous ‘Opera Suite’ in the hotel. Equipped with an Eames lounge chair, vintage mid-century Scandinavian furniture and a rich collection of opera records – imagine hundreds of vinyls from operas played in Vienna. A record player adds to the mid-century vibe and what can I tell you – I went to bed with the one-and-only Callas singing La Traviata. Oh Vienna, you charmer!
The hotel’s location is another plus. The 7th Bezirk is a wonderful district full of artisans, design shops and cool coffee places. Community gardens line the streets, third-wave coffee places rub shoulders with traditional Viennese cafés. Vintage fashion stores, design shops, great restaurants – they are all in walking distance. Some of my favorites just around the hotel are Burggasse24 (vintage fashion store and planty café), Fürth Kaffee (third-wave coffee), Joseph Brot (fabulous bakery), Sous Bois (lovely stationery store), Die Sellerie (design boutique), Mari’s MetchaMatcha (Japanese restaurant), Tian (Michelin star vegetarian restaurant), Café Sperl (traditional Viennese café).
Let me return to the hotel: I already told you about my fantastic suite. Luckily, I had the opportunity to peek into more rooms during a guided tour. So I saw the ‘Library Suite’ (with a stunning collection of vintage books), the ‘Green Room’, the Josef Hoffmann Suite (a pioneer of Viennese Modernism) and more. Every room was truly a surprise and had its ohhh and aahhh moments. Whether it was mirrored walls, tapestry, dramatic chandeliers, or wild prints – the array of interior styles is exceptional in this hotel.
I will let the pictures speak for themselves. And I warmly recommend a weekend trip to Vienna. And once you there, why don’t you treat yourself to a little extra and stay at the stunning boutique hotel Altstadt Vienna? Just sayin. My arguments are all above – you decide! Happy travels, friends!
