Let me start this blog post with Sara Toufali‘s own words: I can’t even! There are many people who inspire me out there, but Sara has a special place in my inspiration loving heart. Her home in an incessant source of inspiration. Recently I told her that I could move into her apartment in an instant and feel right at home. You will see why in this blog post! But Sara inspires me beyond her home and interior styling skills. Her wit, her charms, and her positive personality shine through her Instagram stories in particular. If you follow her, you might hear her squeak from time to time: I can’t even!!!
Sara is a LA based lifestyle blogger. Her world is a captivating universe of botanicals, colours, sunshine, smiles – all beautifully immortalized on her blog Black & Blooms as well as on her Instagram account. Given my love for boho interiors, I have to admit that her home is the manifestation of a dream home to me. I love how Sara mixes patterns, colours, and textures in her home. Moreover I love the lived-in vibe and the coziness that seem to ooze out of her Instagram feed. Trust me, you will love it too!
Now things get even better: Sara is not only super cute but she also has a very handsome boyfriend. As much as I enjoy seeing them together, what I love most are the fun Instagram stories they create. It gives me a constant giggle to see her boyfriend rolling his eyes when Sara gets back home with half a dozen new plants. Botanicals are yet another highlight in her home. I love Sara’s beautiful and lush urban jungle and I could not be happier that our Urban Jungle book feel right at home at Sara’s. On top of it all: Sara loves vinyls as much as I do. She loves crystals as much as I do. Oh my, what can I say – this lady is darn inspiring!
In my blog series ‘People who inspire me’ I really aim to share wonderful, positive, and inspiring people with you. And I mean it. Even though I have not met Sara in person yet, it feels like she’s a good friend. After all when you discover many similarities you create an instant bond with people – even through social media. Furnishing and decorating a house with handmade pieces is a wonderful way of creating a personal and unique home. If you are a DIY talent, you go and make your own things. If you are not (like me) or lack the time for DIY, you go and scout for handmade pieces. Up to now I only thought of flea markets, some online platforms, or direct maker studios as sources for handmade products. But did you know that you can even buy handmade pieces on Amazon.de? And I mean all kind of handmade pieces. Like a dining table, yes a dining table too!
So when I teamed up with ‘Handmade at Amazon’ to create a story for the blog, my challenge was easily set: I need a new dining table. And I want a handmade dining table made of reclaimed wood. Said and done! Stunningly enough this was no issue at all. ‘Handmade at Amazon’ teamed me up with the artisan Andreas Wilhelm. Andreas is specialized in making customized furniture out of reclaimed wood – check out his website too! Quite often the wood is more than 150 years old and found at old Bavarian farmhouses. So the story of my new old dining table commenced.
First, I went to visit the artisan in his studio about an hour drive south of Munich. Together we decided on the wood and look of the table. I wanted a very simple, square dining table. Such a table is ideal for my limited space and I found it incredibly difficult to find a reclaimed wood table with such small sizes. Hence we created one together. The reclaimed wood was actually floor planks and beams from a more than 100 year old local farmhouse. I got the opportunity to put the finishing touches by myself. Polishing, brushing, waxing – all done by myself. Finally, I am pretty happy with the result!
I think my new-old dining table adds the right touch of rustic to my home. I love the look and feel of the waxed reclaimed wood tabletop. It has so much character and tells a story. Not to mention that it looks ace for pictures. Frankly, I couldn’t be happier! ‘Handmade at Amazon’ is a great new platform to find the work of more than 5,000 local and European artisans.
