This morning I woke up and decided to share a glimpse into my not yet fully finished new bedroom. All that drive and vigor came from a very good night’s sleep and a fresh and easy-going start in the morning. And this happened despite the dark and gloomy season here. Waking up in wintertime is a real challenge – my alarm clock is set at 6:45 am and it is still night outside. Now our human body is just like any other living being – we need light to live. And to wake up. Several studies have shown the effect of light on sleeping and waking patterns. So I decided to change my pattern too and wake up with the sunrise. Even in dark winter times.

For today’s post I have teamed up with Philips. When they approached me and asked if I was game to test their new Wake Up Light I was hesitant at first. A Wake Up Light? I have an alarm clock. What the heck. And now here I am: A fervent believer in the benefits of a Wake Up Light! My mornings have changed in 2018! It was on January 2nd that I woke up for the first time with the Philips Wake-Up Light. At 6:45 am the sun was slowly rising in my bedroom. The warm light tickled my senses and I opened one eye, then the other. Slowly, as I was still rolling in bed, I heard chirping forest birds in the distance. But where was I waking up? In a jungle? In paradise? No, just in my bedroom. And while it was still night outside, my bedroom was glowing and filled with gentle bird sounds as if I was in a magical forest.

I can not describe how much easier it was for me to get up. Seriously, I was not aware of the fact that the darkness outside made my winter mornings so hard. In general I am not an early riser, but with the sunrise simulation and the chirping birds coming from my Wake-Up Light everything seemed so much easier. After day one I have abandoned my old alarm clock. I mean who wants to be woken up by a buzzing alarm sound if you can opt for chirping forest birds. Or rolling ocean waves. Right?

But if you thought that is it, let me tell you more: The Philips Somneo is actually a Sleep and Wake-Up Light. It has a sunset simulation too as well as a RelaxBreathe mode to help you fall asleep more easily. A variety of seven wake up sounds as well as three nature sounds can be chosen, but you can also opt for your favorite radio station or choose your own tune. Additionally, the Wake-Up Light functions as a bedside light or speaker. Now that is a multi-talent, isn’t it?

For me this Wake-Up Light is a real game changer. It will definitely make my mornings brighter and easier throughout the darker season. But I don’t want to just talk and tell you things. Instead, you should test it and convince yourself. Together with Philips I am giving away one Somneo Wake-Up Light on Instagram. Hop over and join in – and your mornings will be bright, happy, and hey, you might hear a few chirping birds too! Happy mornings wherever you are!

5 Ways to Organize Your Home for a Happy New Year

House and Home Hello, friends! As we are beginning a new year, many of us are ready to start working on personal goals or dreams. Those of us with “house-shaped hearts” know that our home plays a big role in how we feel and the life we live, too. I really do believe that being […]

Book Review: The Maverick Soul

Hello friends! I hope you all had a very good and smooth transition into 2018! May the new year bring health, joy, and happiness to all of you! I want to kick off the new year here on Happy Interior Blog with a book review. It’s been a long time since my last book review so I figured I’ll share a recent find with you that resonates with me a lot – and I am pretty sure with many of you too: The Maverick Soul. Written by interior designer Miv Watts and beautifully captured by photographer Hugh Stewart, this books takes you on a visual voyage into the homes of 24 creative and bohemian people from around the world.

‘The Maverick Soul’ is not only a book about those maverick souls, it is also addressed to readers with a distinct maverick soul. Those who value passion over trend and who live their lives at its best – with all the ups and downs it brings, all the joy, sorrow, hope, the travels, the explorations. The book contains portraits of the lives and homes of eccentric, eclectic and free-spirited bohemians. And I like to think of myself as a maverick soul too.

Author and interior designer Miv Watts puts it in great words by saying that these homes can be cluttered and chaotic or cool and clean-lined, but they are never contrived – the emphasis being on passion over trend. They are the patchword of a life lived to the full in every aspect: with truth, curiosity and self-expression. Those home are packed with personality and quirk – and there is hardly anything I love more than such homes. They are like a book where you start reading and discovering the owner’s personality, step by step, bit by bit.

I invite you to discover the book for yourself for it is a wonderful collection of personalities, stories, homes, and inspiration. Reading the portraits and seeing the homes you will feel the urge to look around and see if your home tells your story too. Happy reading!

The Frame: How to seamlessly integrate a TV into interiors

Interior design and home decor lovers strive for beautiful, personal spaces. The choices of colors, textures, furniture pieces, and accessories are meticulously made. Quite often the appealing results are immortalized in photo shootings. However there is often one piece in the living room that troubles the visual harmony: the TV. Often cut out of photos, hidden, or simply removed, this big ‘black box’ has been a challenge for most interior designers and home decorators. But those times are gone. Samsung has recently launched a TV called ‘The Frame’. And the name is not only promising, it is a revelation for interiors!

For the first time it is possible to seamlessly integrate a TV into an interior concept. With ‘The Frame’ the TV gets a whole new visual appearance in your home. Not only you get to choose a customized frame to fit your interior style, but you can also use the TV in art mode. What does this mean? It means that your TV turns into a decorative piece of art to enhance your interior style. And art mode does not mean choosing among five options like for a simple screensaver. It means truly art mode. With a wide variety of photography, graphic art, paintings, and even a whole line up of collaborations with world famous museums and galleries (as part of an additional Art Store) you can truly make your TV a statement piece in your home. Have I mentioned you can also simply use one of your fab pictures as art?

‘The Frame’ offers also different options how to be presented: Like a classical art piece mounted on your wall (maybe as part of a gallery wall?), with the normal stand on a sideboard or with an additional studio stand, a gallery like tripod. So when I had to make my choices it was pretty clear: I opted for a walnut design frame and a studio stand. And what about the art? I gave it a thought and wanted to create an ‘urban jungle’ camouflage scenery. You know, where the TV actually becomes part of your urban jungle. So lots of plants and one of my snapshots from Tulum in Mexico combined resulted in a green corner.

Now who can spot the TV? Ha! It is truly seamlessly integrated in my little urban jungle, isn’t it? The best part is that in art mode the TV regulates its brightness according to the light situation and a motion sensor simply switches off the art mode when nobody is around for a while. Smart and pretty cool.

As much as I enjoy my urban jungle camouflage situation, I also enjoy watching a good movie on this amazing screen. For the first time I have the impression of having a real home cinema at home. But that is another story. For the time being let’s play ‘find the TV in the jungle’! I am exploring!

I hope those of you who celebrated Christmas had a wonderful time. Now we have a few days in between the festivities with New Year’s Eve approaching soon. So I thought I return to blogging with a new contribution for my blog series ‘People who inspire me’. Today I want to introduce you to a cool guy from Germany named Sebastian Wilop. His home and plant addiction is a constant source of inspiration for me. See for yourself.

I have e-met Sebastian on Instagram where he is regularly sharing peeks into his green home. His love for plants, vintage furniture, ethnic patterns caught my eye from the first moment. Additionally he keeps posting cool places that he discovers on-the-go which makes his Instagram account additionally attractive.

One of his most popular rooms is the living room. Spacious, filled with light, and chosen vintage pieces and a striking kilim rug it constantly inspires and gives new ideas. The lush plants are another highlight of course. But I will not blabber too much about evident things. You can see it for yourself – go and check out Sebastian’s Instagram account. Happy quiet days!
