Home Tour: Urban Jungle in Berlin

Let me take you to a beautiful and lush urban jungle in Berlin today. Today’s home tour is really one of my all-time favorites on Instagram – the home of Theo. Whenever one of her pics pops up on my Instagram feed, I am getting really big eyes. Her Berlin home is truly inspiring. It is a personal space carefully curated with meaningful details. Not to mention the plants. Unfortunately I had no time to visit Theo personally, but I managed to organize a little home tour just for you. Shall we discover Theo’s urban jungle in Berlin? Let’s roll!

Theo’s Berlin apartment is not only home to 100+ plants but to her partner and two cats, too. And the plants play a crucial role in this warm home: What used to be Theo’s passion turned out into a mutual passion for both herself and her partner. They both share the plant love and have even defined areas of responsibility. While her boyfriend takes care of the plants on the balcony and in the kitchen, Theo is responsible for the rest of the apartment. And my favorite part of this plant love story is phrased by Theo herself: “He tends to bring me new plants every now and then. I think this is love.” I can only add: I am pretty sure this is love!

When Theo and her partner moved into their Berlin home, they sealed and sanded all walls by themselves. It was a hell lot of work but fun too. The result is awesome: the walls have a used look with marbled effects. Furnishing the home was also a flowing process. Most furniture pieces are thrifted via eBay or sourced at local thrift shops. Additionally, many pieces are hacked and thus made unique. The result is a beautiful, personal and unique home full of stories.

Now let’s talk about their favorite room in the apartment. I bet you will not guess it! Their favorite room is the pantry! Theo emphasises that she could not live in an apartment without a pantry (or balcony and tub for the record). Nowadays it is pretty rare to have an apartment with a pantry as most older apartments are being refurbished and pantries get sacrificed for the sake of bigger bathrooms. Hence, I guess Theo will stay in her current home for quite a while!

Personally I think that Theo’s apartment is a perfect example of an effortless European style. It is not a home that follows style trends and dictates. Instead, Theo follows her guts and feelings, collects, repurposes and buys vintage. The result is a warm home that speaks of the personality of its owners. And honestly, these are the best and most beautiful homes to me. I hope you enjoyed today’s little home tour!

Museum at home: Painted Art for your walls

Once a visitor told me that my apartment looks like a little museum or curiosity cabinet. I liked the comparison as I feel it resembles my personality. A home filled with treasures from afar, personal items, and thrifted goodies – that is my home indeed. I also love art on the walls. Sometimes it happens that I discover a great piece of art in a museum or exhibition and wish I could have it at home too – as an original painting, ha! I know that is impossible. But I am also not always happy to live with a framed poster of a famous painting. So I was looking for an alternative. That is how I stumbled upon Kunstkopie.de (find the US, UK, and EU source at the end of the blog post). Let me tell you more!

A few years ago I visited an exhibit of bohemian paintings in the Grand Palais in Paris. I discovered one painting that I never saw before but I was instantly enchanted. I gazed at it and when I got closer to read the description I was stunned: it was a painting by Charles Landelle from 1872. But the most stunning part was its title: Jeune bohémien serbe. The young Serbian bohemian. I am of Serbian descent and I am bohemian in my soul so it almost felt like this is me (ok we do not resemble a lot but still). I bought a small postcard and framed it – ever since it is hanging above my bar cart. But I dreamt of having this portrait as a big oil painting. And this was made possible by Kunstkopie.de.

Kunstkopie.de is a great source for art at home. Of course you can order art prints framed or unframed to decorate your home. But what I really liked was their service for real paintings. Original and famous pieces of art are painted brushstroke by brushstroke by young artists – with real oil paint on canvases. If you wonder now: No you are not buying an art forgery! Instead it is a legitimate art copy that differs in small details from the original. Additionally, it does not have the patina of old portraits. However, you get a museum quality piece of art for your home at an affordable price tag! Now this was definitely a great solution for me!

Ordering an art copy takes some time. The artist needs to work on the piece of art for several weeks. I also opted for an adequate framing – a golden frame was just humble enough for this glorious painting, don’t you agree? Additionally, I think it looks really fabulous on my dark grey wall.
