Design loving hearts will sigh. Visiting the Vitra Campus is like a journey destined to happen to any design aficionado. The Vitra Campus is located in the corner of three European countries: Germany, Switzerland, and France. The little town of Weil am Rhein would not be on any design map if it was not for Vitra. Last week I was invited to come over and visit the Vitra Campus. I must admit it was like a little dream that came true. And I can also reassure you: I was stunned with the size and diversity seen on the Vitra Campus. But let me take you along here on the blog.

The first touchpoint is the Vitra House, probably the landmark building at the campus for visitors. Build in 2010 by the famous architecture office Herzog & De Meuron it surprises with an unusual shape. It consists of 12 houses stuck together one atop the other. The unusual architecture sets a perfect place to exhibit Vitra‘s fantastic portfolio. It is a place to discover and experience the world of Vitra.

But this is only one highlight at the Vitra Campus. The Vitra Campus is in fact much more than just the visitor center in the Vitra House. The large space features various production halls, exhibition areas, restaurants, archives, parks and more. The Vitra Campus is also unique in the sense that it showcases an incredibly large number of works by contemporary architects – names like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Jean ProuvĂ©, Jasper Morrison – just to mention a few.

Design and architecture fans will drool – excuse the expression but it seems very appropriate in this case. Whether you stroll through the showrooms and the design shop in the Vitra House, or visit an exhibition in the former fire brigade built by Zaha Hadid or in the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry, or you peek at an endless number of iconic design chairs in the Vitra Schaudepot – you will be left in awe.

The Vitra Campus also features one of the last original Jean Prouvé gas stations from 1953. Moreover, an old villa called Hager Villa features a fully equipped home with Vitra furniture and accessories. Usually closed to the public, we had the unique opportunity to visit this space and have lunch there. Due to the vast area and the big amount of design and architecture gems, you can also book a guided tour through the Vitra Campus. I strongly recommend that! So much to learn!

Last but not least you can treat yourself to design classics. Not only small accessories in the shops but also a handmade Eames Lounge Chair! The Lounge Chair Atelier offers appointments where you can customize your own Lounge Chair and it will be assembled right there. Now isn’t that like a very special gift you could offer someone…or yourself?

Visiting the Vitra Campus is truly a highlight for design fans. Additionally you can enjoy a very beautiful city too: The Swiss city of Basel is just across the border, about 15 minutes by car. But that is yet another story to be told. Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

This blogpost was created in collaboration with Vitra who kindly invited me to visit the Vitra Campus. As always all opinions and photos are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands who support this blog!
