If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed my recent trip to Cape Town in South Africa. Some of you even wondered why I traveled that far for a mere four days. I will tell you why: IKEA launched a brand new collection called ÖVERALLT in Cape Town. I had the honor to be invited as a German influencer and get a first detailed look of the final collection. Why Cape Town you might wonder? The ÖVERALLT collection was kicked off a few years ago right there in Cape Town – inn collaboration with the design conference Design Indaba. And at this year’s Indaba conference the final collection was launched in the presence of all designers who came from Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Kenya, and South Africa.
The ÖVERALLT collection is a feast for the eyes and embodies the vibrancy and craftsmanships of Africa. This vast and varied continent has lots of talent and traditional craftsmanship that need to come to the foreground for a global audience. IKEA enables right that by inviting designers from across Africa and across disciplines to create a collection adequately named ÖVERALLT – it means ‘everywhere’ in Swedish.
The South African design superstar Laduma Ngxokolo (whose fashion is worn by Beyoncé and co.) created rugs and cushions inspired by traditional patterns of the Xhosa culture. Cape Town based designers Renee Rossouw and Sindiso Khumalo created a collection of colourful home textiles inspired by the African landscape.
Senegalese artist Selly Rabe Kane has an obsession with hair and the West African tradition of braided hair. As a result she created baskets that resemble braided hair. On the other hand, Issa Diabaté, an architect from the Ivory Coast, created a chair from one piece of plywood that comes without fixtures. A perfect piece to get creative with DIY ideas!
Studio Propolis from Kenya created a great bench, stool and dining table that are focused on the idea of socializing and getting together. Also a collection of cookware adds to the socializing idea – after all food and eating is a highly social event in many African cultures.
The designer Bibi Seck from Senegal created a rocking chair and stool/foot rest that remind him of the relaxed times in his mother’s garden in Dakar. I love the pattern! And the Egyptian design duo of Reform Studio created tote bags, rugs and cushion covers from recycled materials – most of them from recycled chips packaging!
I really enjoyed the launch which was lively, fun and cool at the same time. All designers were present and super easy-going and approachable. The good weather, chilled drinks and lush plants helped me feel right at home – in Africa! The ÖVERALLT collection will launch in May 2019 in IKEA stores worldwide! I will definitely get my hands on some pieces! Stay tuned!
