Writing a book as a blogger is a special experience. When I heard that my long-time friend and Scandinavian design expert Allan Torp of Bungalow5.dk was working on a book, I was pretty excited. I knew there is going to be lots of good Scandi design advice coming from this guy. And I was not wrong! His new book ‘Scandinavian Style at Home’ is like a handy encyclopedia of Scandinavian design for your home. On top of it, the book has kicked off in various languages already such as English, German and French.

To give you a little insight into the book, I have decided to interview the author Allan Torp and ask him a few questions about Scandinavian design. And just as a little hint: At the end of this article I have a little giveaway for you. So read all your way to the end of the text. I promise it is worth it! Let’s roll!

Tell us in a few sentences the core idea of your book.
The book itself is a thorough room by room guide to achieving the Scandinavian style, with description on colours, favourite pieces and how you with easy steps can live like a real Scandinavian. Part of the book is also a whole genesis of this design phenomenon.

I am writing about design icons, must have solutions as well as different aspects of organizing your everyday spaces, I take the readers on a very pleasant and great illustrated journey through modern, Scandinavian homes.

Scandinavian design has been discussed in many books until now. What sets your book apart from the others?
My book is not just another book with beautiful pictures, but it’s a room by room guide on how you can incorporate the Scandinavian style in your own home, almost like an encyclopedia. What to do and what not to do. For each room I have added some of my favorite design pieces that will go very well in that specific room.

Does Scandinavian design always mean minimalistic, monochromatic living?
It sure did. In the 2000s it was all about minimalistic, monochromatic living, and while we still see a lot of white marble and light wooden furniture, then todays Scandinavian design style is a lot more about showing who you really are, adding heirlooms, green plants, fun items found on your travels – you want to create a home that your guests feel at home in, not a museum where no one dare to touch anything.

Name three Scandinavian design favorites that you admire?
It is almost impossible to only name three. I am a big fan of both the designers of the past and many of the new faces. I am big fan of Danish/Italian duo GamFratesi, who have created so many great designs the past 5-10 years for brands liks Gubi, Royal Copenhagen, & Lightyears. I am also a huge fan of Chris L. Halstrøm, whos first commercial design, the Georg collection for Skagerak, got worldwide recognition.

What is the next big thing coming from the Scandinavian design scene?
Introduction of colour. It’s been two decades of everything black and white, slowly we are seeing a new Scandinavian design style with a lot more colour – the super trendy is really going for the bolder colour while most are introducing a lot of earthy colours like browns and greens.

Last but not least: As a Copenhagen local, give us some tips where we should go and enjoy Scandinavian design (and maybe good food and drinks?).
You probably seen the overpriced avocado sandwich on a white marble table at Aterlier September, a go to for many tourists. However, instead you should visit Frederik Bille Brahe new restaurant Kafeteria at the National Gallery of Denmark – it has everything you are asking for: great design, good food and drinks.

Also worth a visit is Skagerak flag ship store not far from the Little Mermaid, it is a great scene of all their great designs and make sure to spot the hand painted wall paper by All The Way to Paris in the sunroom. Finally I highly recommend checking in to one of the new signature suites at the iconic Radisson Collection Royal Copenhagen, it doesn’t get more Scandinavian style than that, beautifully decorated rooms with great views of Copenhagen.
