Go East: Kiev Travel Tips

This winter I had the first time experience of traveling to the Ukrainian capital Kiev. And oh my was I in for a treat! Suddenly I thought the Pet Shop Boys have never been so wrong when they sang ‘Go West’. Because I exclaim here and now: Go East! And start by visiting Kiev – a buzzing city with beautiful architecture, a great landscape, a vibrant coffee scene, and a cool lifestyle! Here are a few Kiev travel tips for you!

Kiev is sometimes referred to as ‘the Rome of the north’. If you visit the Ukrainian capital, you will understand why. Kiev is built on a hilly landscape and boasts with beautiful churches and monasteries. Speaking of churches and monasteries – you will have the opportunity to visit quite a few while in town but do not miss to visit the Lavra monastery complex. It is incredibly beautiful with golden domes, a huge areal with parks, shops, and a stunning cave church – be ready to enter the most holy of Ukraine right there and then!

But Kiev is much more than its churches and monasteries! It is a truly vibrant city! Walk around the cobbled streets of the Podil area (also referred to as the Montmartre of Kiev) with its flea markets, little cafés and good restaurants. Start at the beautiful St. Andrew’s church (with nice vistas of the city and the river) and descend the Andriivskyi descent. If you want to taste delicious Ukrainian food, have a lunch or dinner at Kanapa restaurant and start with Ukrainian sparkling wine, a caviar selection and guinea fowl paté with cardamom. Yum! Just opposite of the restaurant you will find their café called Kanapka – a great place for coffee or tea and some cake in a very nice atmosphere! Next door is the tiny Coffee Room – literally a tiny room with hipster coffee (while outside a Ukrainian grandmother might sell handknitted socks – I love the vibe). Check out the knitwear along the street, as well as antiques, ceramics and amber from Ukraine!

If you descend all the way down you can also stop over at Lviv Handmade Chocolate – oh my, try the hot chocolate and do not miss to buy a box of their chocolates. It is really good! You will then reach the spacious Kontraktova square with lots of shops, a pedestrian zone, restaurants, and most of the time some outdoor markets, luna parks and more entertainment.

Also stroll around the area between St. Sophia cathedral and St. Michael’s church, go to the famous Maidan square where a few years ago the ‘Orange Revolution’ took place. From there you can walk up the Khreschatyk Street with high street shops and department stores. A good stop is the Vsi Svoi shop – it is specialized in Ukrainian products and crafts – definitely a good place to get a nice Ukrainian souvenir. Have a look at their ceramics! They also have a very cute and hip café if you need more caffeine!

My favorite tip for a souvenir for yourself (or a beloved person) is an original Ukrainian fashion item – the ‘Vyshyvanka’. These are linen shirts with hand-stitched embroideries in various patterns and colors. They are beautiful! I got myself one and love it! Go to Etnodim to find a really beautiful piece – trust me you will be charmed the moment you try it on! And the prices are really good!!

While walking around I noticed numerous cool cafés – so be assured that you will stumble upon a nice coffee place every now and then. Two of my faves include the 16.Coffee, a cool Scandi style café with excellent filter coffee and great pastries. Also the One Love Coffee on top of the Pinchuk Art Center is amazing – all white, puristic, with great views of downtown Kiev.

Spending one weekend in Kiev is great but by far not enough to discover all of the city’s charms. I did not have time to visit a few museums, or even a play at the Opera or a concert at the philharmony. Nor could I got to all the fabulous cafés and shops! But it is a good excuse to travel back one day! The city is really a huge surprise and charming destination – even with bitter cold winter weather! I can only stress it out one last time: Put Kiev on your travel itinerary! You will NOT regret it! You can thank me later:-)

Dream Bedding – Pom Pom at Home x COCOCOZY Design House

When I was thinking about bedding for the Design House, the only bedding I wanted was Pom Pom.  All the beds in my own house are Pom Pom at Home bedding and I knew I wanted the design home to have the same feel. Here is a story about the master bedroom bedding in my house when I first moved in before rugs etc for reference.

So happy that House Beautiful highlighted the master bedroom and the fourth bedroom in the house. The COCOCOZY Design House has 4 bedrooms, with one doubling as a possible study. Hilde and Wendy from her team gave me an open store to pick from for bedding.  Anything I wanted for the design house. This was literally a bedding dream!

Furniture Highlights – COCOCOZY Design House

One of our partners for the COCOCOZY Design House was Article Furniture. They provided us with furniture for the living and dining room. And I love it!

So proud of the Design House completed living room, now featured in House Beautiful AND Elle Decor! I cannot wait to show you the final look. Scroll below for more.

Obsessed with these two chairs from Article furniture. I love their plush velvet and how deep, cushiony and wonderful they are. I chose their color to go with our neutrals and my own COCOCOZY rug.

We chose the dining room furniture because I wanted bright and natural wood in the dining room, starting with the floors and the wooden frames on the wall.

I love this Article teak outdoor dining table to tie it all together. I decided to surround this dining table with vintage chairs that I found at a flea market. Such a great finished look!

Daybed + Living Room (and Daybed Sources)

When we moved into this house we envisioned a window seat or bench under this back window in our living room. The view out the the mountains, water and sunsets was one of the selling features of the house, so creating a spot to relax and enjoy it made sense! We had so many other […]

Caesarstone Counter Crush –

Caesarstone reveal. It has been a while since my last update on the COCOCOZY Design House Kitchen. And I’m so excited to reveal how amazing the kitchen and bathroom counters are coming along!

Caesarstone generously supplied all of the countertop material for the kitchen and the bathrooms in the COCOCOZY Design House. I knew I wanted white counters with distinctive veins that mirror natural stone. Statuario Maximus (not shiny and polished) for kitchen and Pure White for the master and 2 other bathrooms!

I love Caesarstone as I put it in my first kitchen remodel at my tiny cottage in the Hollywood Hills years ago. This time around, I knew exactly what I wanted and where to get the perfect countertops.

Statuario Maximus for the kitchen has the marble-like veining with none of the drawback of marble. That’s why I love quarts: for their marble look, durable functionality and ease to clean.

Creative Wall Art With Instax

Sometimes I wish I was a more handy DIY kind of guy. The one who can create unexpected things for the home. But alas I am not that much a DIY person. However, I also learned that for a DIY project you also need good tools. Then even a DIY nerd like me can actually create something nice. This time my handy DIY tool was the cool instax SHARE SP-3 – a compact printer for instant images taken with your smartphone. Let me show you what I did.

Most of you know that I love crystals, rocks and fossils. I have a little collection in a glass box. However it is not possible to hang it on the wall for display. And then DIY Igor came into play! Why not snap pictures of some of my favorite crystals and rocks with my smartphone and print instant pictures with instax? Thought, done.

I love the result as taking pictures with your smartphone allows you to actually edit the images. The instax SHARE app offers editing features and is super simple and intuitive. Once I finished editing my images, I simply connected the printer via wifi through the instax SHARE app. And then the fun begins: printing your instant images!

For an artsy effect I chose to photograph every crystal, rock and fossil on the same linen cloth and opted for a deep frame with a passepartout. I arranged nine instant images and added – as you might have noticed – one colorful rock for visual interest. The result is fabulous. Well, at least I love it!

Also the placement for my new wall art was quickly found. Above my record player it makes just perfectly sense with all the boho vibes. I am super happy with the final result and truly fascinated by the instax printer. I think I will use it more often as it is a great way to immortalize your pictures taken with the smartphone. So if you are a DIY person or a not-so-DIY person like moi, this instax printer will make it easy and fun to create new decor ideas for your walls at home. Try it. I really like it! You can get more inspiration on their Instagram account if you like. Have fun!
