Summer Room Refresh

How to Decorate – Ballard Designs blog Summertime in the NW is so lovely, especially when it’s sunny! We’ve had amazing weather lately. We get quite a bit of sunlight (all year round) through the large windows in the back of our house, which definitely impacts how we decorate. In fact, as we begin our […]

Incurable Love Affair: Ceramics

ceramics, ceramics love, handmade, pottery, vintage ceramics

I can’t help it: I am deeply in love with ceramics. The more raw they look, the more handmade, and inspired by ancient shapes, the more I love them. Frankly I have too many ceramics pieces already at home. Most of my ceramics are vintage finds. Yet I can not stop buying new pieces when I discover them. However, I can proudly say that none of these pieces in today’s blog post is in my home. Yet I would buy each and every piece in an instant!

These pieces have all a very ancient look. They could actually come from excavation sites. To me, they evoke a feeling of empires long past and forsaken cultures. My archaeology loving heart skips a beat! 1. Takashi Sogo via Etsy. 2. Source unknown via Pinterest. 3. Skoby Ceramics via Etsy. 4. Bruno Gambone vases via Invaluable.

As an Urban Jungle Blogger I would love to have a balcony or even a garden where I could grow even more plants and maybe some veggies and fruits. And I’d be gladly watering them with this fantastic ceramics piece poetically called ‘La Chantepleure’. This kind of watering devices date back to medieval times. Speaking of my plant obsession: How about these cute trinket bowls? 5. DIY trinket bowls via Lia Griffith. 6. Liquorice Moon Studio via Etsy.

I am equally smitten by these beautiful Silvia K ceramics plates photographed by Emma Gutteridge.

There we go with even more ancient looking ceramics. Pre-historic shapes and raw surfaces are absolutely trending I think. These pieces are by Japanese artist Yoko Komae found via OEN.

Last but not least I love to sip my coffee out of beautiful handmade mugs. This double striped angle mug by ceramicist Jeremy Ayers is a winner! I would love to have it! Found it via Mociun. If you want more inspiration and ideas about ceramics that I love check out my ceramics Pinterest board. And now I have to clean off the dust of my ceramics collection. Ha!

Inspired By: Lake House Style

Lauren Liess Lake houses feel like summer to me! Most of my life I lived near or even in a house on a lake growing up. My previous house was actually also on a lake (well, right next to it, not ON it). Maybe that’s why I felt inspired to dream up a perfect lake house […]

People who inspire me: The Life Traveller

Among bloggers and creatives there is one recurring question: How to stay inspired? For me the solution is out there. It is the people who inspire me. Thus, today I want to start a new series on the blog about those creative and inspiring people. To kick off the new series I want to introduce you to Manon Valesca Maria of ‘The Life Traveller’. You will quickly realize why she is so inspiring!

Manon is not just a blogger, just a creative. Besides her thriving career for various Dutch lifestyle magazines she is also the creator of Naramatisho, a Kenyan handicraft label. But the most important role of her life is motherhood. In her words: She is the blessed mother of a wonderful rainbow family. Additionally she does charity work and – in her words – shares light. What a beautiful expression, don’t you agree?

This wonderful woman seems to live many lives but in fact the one life given to us is big enough to capture it all. It is just what we make out of it! Nowadays Manon and her rainbow family divide their time between Kenya and Amsterdam collecting experiences and positive thoughts.

To set things clear: I have never met Manon in person. Yet I feel thoroughly inspired by her work and life. The most obvious source of inspiration is her incredibly personal and beautiful home. But it is more than that. It is her personality that shines through her social media presence. It is a real human being that you see and feel. Authenticity is a catchword here, but it feels to technocratic to be used. It is warmth, honesty, and positive vibes that you feel pursuing her life and work. Her obsession with plants is helping too, I admit!

To round things up I will just tell you that Manon also accompanies likeminded people as a life coach. Because she believes in one wonderful thing that I would like to underline here too: Everyone deserves to be happy!

Expect new inspiring people here on Happy Interior Blog in the future. And do not wonder if you find my email in your inbox asking you to participate. Now go and give Manon some extra dose of love and positive vibes on her website and Instagram account.

Tiny Bedroom Tour (Courtney’s Room + Announcement)

Well, hello! It’s Courtney (Melissa’s daughter) here today! Some of you who have been around The Inspired Room for awhile might remember a few years ago when I moved into a tiny bedroom, (actually it was probably intended to be an office) on the entry level of my sister Kylee and brother-in-law’s Seattle townhouse. By […]

Essential Living and Wooden Floors

Let me tell you one thing. Whenever I think of moving, I always fear the fact to find a lovely apartment with no wooden floors. That would definitely be a no-go for me. Wooden flooring, be it parquet or planks, is essential to me. It is part of my essential living if you want so. Hence, when Boen asked me to get creative with their wooden floors I was all game.

First let me introduce you (if you don’t know them): Boen is an international and high-quality manufacturer of hardwood flooring with Norwegian roots. For their latest product launch they teamed up with one of the leading trend experts (and my dear friend) Gudy Herder. Gudy worked on three trends for Boen and today I want to focus on one that resonates with me a lot: Essential.

The trend ‘Essential’ focuses on our desire to return to our roots. The deep understanding and appreciation of our roots is boosted by a fast-paced world dictated by digital impulses and rapid consumerism. Think of nature, plants, handmade, raw materials. It also nods to the Japanese ‘Wabi Sabi’ philosophy where perfection is to be found in imperfection. Eventually I felt that this trend perfectly described my current home.

The idea of bringing the ‘Essential’ trend into visualization resulted in a free-spirited mood board. I call it free spirited as I let my guts lead the way. I hardly stick to rules and put too much thought into it – it is more what comes from within and feels right. I matched natural materials like wood, ceramics, stones, but also plants and dried flowers. I added touches of green, ochre, and blue. Finally, the wooden floor samples from Boen framed the mood board.

So what do you think of the trend ‘Essential’? Where do you see yourself more – in ‘Essential’, ‘Pause’, or ‘Drama is the new black’? Here’s Gudy’s video that explains more about the trend ‘Essential’:

This blog post has been brought to you in collaboration with ‘Boen’. As always all opinions and photos are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands who support this blog!
