Sometimes life just bites us. The email inbox is flooded. The to-do list is growing. And our ‘mojo’ seems lost in translation. Luckily there is one solution in almost every bigger city. One way to calm our mind and root our being: botanical gardens. These green oases do the trick – they reconnect us to nature. They show us that all that hassle is just modern times hassle. It is not the essence. It is not life. So for today’s ‘Lost in Plantation’ post I am taking you to a new botanical garden – the botanical garden ‘Jevremovac’ in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Belgrade’s botanical garden was founded in 1847 and belongs to the University of Belgrade. It stretches over almost five hectares and features a wide outdoor garden, a Japanese garden and a Victorian greenhouse from the end of the 19th century. With all the bustle and hustle of a city, this garden is a perfect retreat to everyone seeking a quiet and relaxed moment. And that rule applies to all botanical gardens around the world.

Walking through the botanical garden is almost therapeutical. Although I love the outdoor area, to me the true heart of Belgrade’s botanical garden is its Victorian greenhouse. The entrance area invites the visitor with lush tropical leaves and stretches to two sides. One sides hosts a fine selection of more tropical plants and humidity loving species. The other side is reserved for desert dwellers like cacti and succulents. Even though the greenhouse is small compared to some other greenhouses across Europe, it is a real pleasure to discover the almost 1,000 plant species in it.

Whenever I travel, I like to visit the local botanical garden. Not only is it interesting to discover new plants and the places’ history, but I also love to observe the people visiting the gardens. Entire classes of school kids, newly weds taking photos, older visitors, families, tourists. Some of them observe plants in detail, others seem to take a walk, and yet again others sit and read. But all of them seem to have one thing in common: a very relaxed and serene attitude during their visit.

When was the last time you visited a botanical garden? Maybe in your city or somewhere during your travels? Any botanical gardens you can truly recommend? Let me know!
