This month we want to kick start a new series for the Urban Jungle Bloggers – ‘Plant Still-life’. With the ‘Plant Still-life’ we want to encourage you to create a styling vignette with a certain theme by using plants and other props. This month we have chosen the topic ‘Desert’. As always we are very open in our interpretation. So here I roll with my ‘Plant Still-life’.

As always I ended up doing everything in a rush. I got back home after work – extra a bit early – but it was so gloomy that I gave up. Then the light got better and I was running around like a headless chicken. In this season the light is really difficult. But it was time to get going. What would best portray the theme ‘desert’ in my home? I have no piles of sand, no tall cacti, no desert pictures. Then I remembered some old ethnographic images from Egyptian people. And the theme was set.

These images from people from the desert anchor my styling. The rest was a quick shuffling of props. I focused on earthy hues as a reference to the colours of the desert. A handmade mini tajine made of ceramic, a wooden bowl, and brass details framed the styling. Last but not least I added a few plants.

The selected plants are no desert plants. Since the desert I referred to is rather the African Sahara than Central American deserts, it was hard to select adequate plants. Instead I added two cacti, a little banana palm, an Aloe vera plant, and a pineapple plant. I imagine these plants to grow in a lush courtyard of a riad somewhere in Northern Africa. And that is if not in the desert, then at least at the desert’s brink. And that is good enough for today’s styling (after I had collected all kind of props in preparation of this post – see the last images here).
