Shop Love: Makadam Concept Store

In June I had the opportunity to discover the Serbian capital Belgrade. I was out and about looking for interesting design spots, nice cafés and restaurants, cool design hotels and great shops. One of those is Makadam, a concept store in Belgrade’s old town. Makadam literally translates to cobbled street and that’s exactly where you will find the shop: It is located at one of Belgrade’s old cobbled streets with a lingering charm from past centuries. Milena Radenkovic, the founder of Makadam, travels across Serbia to gather unique and refined objects in Serbian villages and towns, in artisans’ workshops and artists’ studios. Hence both, the location and the store have something beautiful in common – the charm of old Serbia.

Makadam blends the new and the old. Traditional vintage objects from Serbia mix with new Serbian designs that are inspired by the country’s tradition.  Thus, Milena manages to purvey a beautiful and distinctive Serbian bohemian atmosphere to her customers. But Makadam is way more than just an inspiring shop. It is also a café-bistro with little tables and chairs lined up the cobbled street under centennial lime trees that infuse the air with their sweet smell on summer days.

The Makadam concept store is a treasure trove. You will find unique vintage items and I strongly recommend passing by when in Belgrade. Score some beautiful kilim rugs or cushion covers made of vintage kilims from the Serbian town of Pirot. Also, look for divine vintage jewelry, traditional Serbian pottery and new brands like Folkk. Another fab score: Handmade scented candles from Belgrade made of 100% natural ingredients.

After your shopping spree take your time and have a seat outside. Order a proper ‘domaca kafa’ (traditional coffee, the same like Turkish mocca) served with a piece of Turkish delight and take a deep breath of lime blossom infused air. Your Serbian experience will be complete right there and then.
