It’s probably a year or so ago that I e-met Anita Goda of Studio Wunderkammer for the first time. I noticed her amazing home on at{mine} for the first time and was intrigued: Who is this utterly talented lady? Is she a stylist? Two weeks ago, during our Urban Jungle book launch in Munich, I had the honor to meet her in person. Not only is she talented, but very lovely too. We had a short chat but I couldn’t help but ask her if she’d be up for a blog feature here on Happy Interior Blog. And luckily she said yes. So here is a short interview with Anita and some peeks into her utterly beautiful home!
Hi Anita, I discovered you a while ago on at{mine} and ever since I am following you on Instagram. Your beautiful pictures and stylings caught my eye and I wonder: Is interior design merely a passion or a profession?
Until recently, interior design was indeed just a passion I lived out in my own home and by sharing pictures of my apartment with interior online communities like at{mine}. I actually have an academic background in arts and media and a general interest in artful stagings and design. A while ago, I had my first opportunity to style a space for someone else when a friend asked me to conceptualize and furnish his business space. It was a very exciting and rewarding experience, and it made me realize I’d love to do this professionally. One thing led to another, and I had the chance to work on several other interior projects, mostly private spaces. These experiences finally led me to showcase and expand my work with the official launch of Studio Wunderkammer.
When designing a space, what is your usual procedure?
Although I usually have a certain look in mind for the space, be it my own or someone else’s, I start by taking a rather pragmatic approach by determining the needs of the interior. I find it extremely frustrating if a room is beautifully styled, yet lacking in functionality, thus being a permanent source of annoyance instead of making life more comfortable. I also take a cue from whatever furniture is at hand and supposed to stay, as well as, of course, budget limits. I then look for the best and most appealing solution, which is where aesthetic aspects really come into play. Ultimately, arranging a room is also an intuitive process for me; I generally seek to create harmonious proportions, showcase unique pieces, and believe in color concepts.
Where do you find inspiration for your interior projects?
I find lots of inspiration in art and just keeping my eyes open for the beauty in everyday life. But I also read interior magazines and books, of course, and find inspiration online, particularly on at{mine}, SoLebIch, and Pinterest. And I got started on Instagram recently, where I’ve really enjoyed following interior feeds from around the world.
What defines a beautiful interior styling to you?
Beauty is an intricate and individual matter, but I’d say that a beautiful styling gives an interior personality by combining symmetry and contrast in unique ways. A beautiful styling might be thoughtfully staged, but it retains a laid-back authenticity and casualness; it’s perfectly balanced, but that does not mean it’s plain and boring; it’s a still life that’s dynamic and full of suspense.
How important are plants in interiors?
I could not imagine living without plants, and I keep most of mine in the kitchen and living room. Plants automatically liven up a space and give it a more relaxed and natural feel. In lieu of potted plants, green leaves in a vase can also do the trick.
Do you have three simple styling tips for us?
That’s a difficult one – it seems for every tip I could give there’s another one that says: Break this rule! So generally, I’d suggest: (1) Stay true to your personal style, (2) take your time, and (3) keep the big picture in mind. It can be fun to experiment with the ever new and changing interior trends, but it can also be overwhelming. Try focusing on a few favorite pieces you really love and never get tired of, and then ask how a new addition would work along with them. The urge to have or change things NOW may result in bad buys, short-term remedies or costly compromises. In the long run, it might be more worthwhile to wait (and save up) for the perfect piece that truly enhances your space and reflects your style. Private interiors in particular should grow and evolve with the people living in them.
Why should we all dedicate a bit more attention to our homes?
Our home is more than a space that gives us shelter—it’s something with great emotional bearing: There’s no place like home, home sweet home, etc… In order to find true rest and comfort at home, it needs to be a safe haven that makes us smile, take a deep breath and relax once we reach it— even if there are dirty dishes waiting for us in the sink.
