How to Protect Water Supply

It is extremely important to make sure that the water supplies of our nation is secure. If there is an attack in any one of the pumping stations, then it will result in widespread illness.
As per EPA reports, in the USA, there are around 155000 water supply units which are entrusted with the responsibility of supplying drinking water. Some of these are privately owned, which supplies water to only a handful of people. And some are metropolitan pumping stations which supplies water to millions of people on a regular basis. For example, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the largest water supply unit of USA. It has a huge pipeline network. The problem of having a huge pipeline network is that it can be easily infected.

However, as per most experts, it is almost impossible to contaminate a pipeline. According to them, huge amounts of contaminants will be required. It is extremely difficult to get hold of such a large quantity of contaminant and then introducing it to the system, without getting caught. However, many studies have shown that it is not as difficult as it seems. There are many pumps available which is capable of injecting deadly toxins into the system.

Apart from getting contaminated, it is also very much likely that someone may attempt to destroy the components of a water system. In that case, the entire water system unit will shut down, leaving millions of water without any water. Firefighting efforts will also take a hit because of this.

Thousands of people are employed in these water supply units and most of them have access to all the facilities. Hence, a breach is very much likely. It will be best if access to the key components of a water unit is restricted to only a handful of trustworthy officials.
